Course Description:

The IV Therapy course is a 30-hour course offered to RN’s, LVN’s, EMT’s, in preparation for performing IV therapy procedures successfully used in the health care field.  It also serves as a review course on fluids of electrolytes used for hydration purposes, blood gas interpretation which entails acid-base balance, blood and blood products, TPN, and central venous lines.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  1. Discuss the causes of fluid and electrolyte imbalance.  Identify the indications for administering intravenous (IV) fluids.
  2. Discuss the content of and reasons for administering nutrient solutions, electrolyte solutions, and blood volume expanders.
  3. List the equipment needed for starting an IV infusion.
  4. Differentiate between the types of intravenous solution containers.  Differentiate between the type of administration sets/flow rate.
  5. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of selected antiseptic solutions.
  6. Describe various IV needles and catheters.
  7. Select the appropriate equipment to being an infusion.
  8. Properly assemble IV equipment before administering an infusion.

An IV Therapy Certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course. The IV Therapy Course is approvedby the California Board of Registered Nursing.
